TAMPA BAY - On Thursday, November 21, the Tampa Bay Storm appeared at Potter Elementary School to participate in the Great American Teach-In.
Storm defensive back De’Audra Dix spent his time answering all of the students’ questions and spoke to them about school and sports. The day also gave Dix the opportunity to reflect on his days as an elementary student.
“I remember when we had a career day at my school when I was seven years old,” said Dix. “A police officer spoke to us and asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told him I wanted to be a football player. It was a dream of mine to play professional football, but I would never have been able to if I did not take school seriously. “
With their eyes and ears open, the first and fifth graders listened intently as Dix spoke about the importance of staying in school and getting an education, letting them know that education comes first.
“It is a privilege to play the game of football or any sport,” said Dix. “As students you have to realize that school always comes first. If you do not listen to your teachers you will not be able to play the games that you love.”
For the school, the day was a success.
“This was such a great day for the children,” said a school official. “At this age children need role models and seeing the Storm come out was a wonderful experience for us all. The team made a positive impact.”
For the Storm, this was another way to give back to the community.
“I love giving back to the children and the community,” said Dix. “This is where it all starts. Now is the time to make an impact and hopefully lay the foundation for the rest of their lives.”
