Things were going the Sea Dogs (15-10) way as starter Trey Ball set down Reading in order in the first two innings and allowing just a walk in the third. That is when the bats came alive for Portland scoring a season-eight runs. Leadoff hitter Danny Mars scored Tzu-Wei LinI on an RBI single to right.
Josh Tobias would then drive in Jake DePew and Mars on a single to left field. Rafael Devers and Nick Longhi would hit back to back singles scoring Tobias and Mike Olt, respectively.
The five runs would knock Fightins starter Brandon Leibrandt out of the game after allowing five hits, three walks and just one strikeout. He would be charged for two more runs, when reliever Joey Denato would walk in Devers, and Longhi would score on Joseph Monge’s hit to center where would also score Lin score capping of the eight-run inning.
Ball, would give the Sea Dogs six strong innings, allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits, two walks and three strikes outs.
But, Reading (14-12) would start the comeback in the fifth when Jiandido Tromp scored on a sac-fly by Jorge Flores, and Scott Kingery hit a solo home run, his seventh of the year, to make the score 8-2.
The Fightins would get another solo home run, also his seventh, in the sixth off of Ball to make it a 8-3 game.
Sea Dogs reliever Luis Ysla would come into the game for Ball at the start of the seventh. Tromp would start it off for the Fightins with a double to center. Mitch Walding would score Tromp on a single.
After getting a strike out, Ysla would walk the next two batters scoring Walding to make it 8-5. Kingery would score on a sac-fly and Kyle Martin would double in Carlos Tocci and Pullin to tie the game 8-8.
Josh Smith would relieve Ysla, but would not have much more success walking Chace Numata and allowing a double to Tromp scoring Martin and Numata to give Reading the lead at 10-8.
The Fightins would add two more in the eighth inning on an error by right fielder Nick Longhi, and one in the ninth on another Longhi error.
“No lead is safe in this game.” Portland Manager Carlos Feebles said after the game. “we have had our comebacks, it was tough, it was windy, but you learn from it.”
Reading’s victory closed out the four game series taking three of the four. Portland will be back in action at Hadlock on Monday at 6:00p.m. against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
