The only true way I can express the level of activity so far in the 2015 NFL Free Agency period is by prefacing it with the face that more then likely while I am typing these words two more moves will have been made. Okay so no deals have actually been secured but many are in place and deals can be secured Tuesday after 4:00pm. Earlier in the day I would have told you that former 49ers running back Frank Gore was likely headed to Philly, and in the moments leading up to this first paragraph, the Colts are apparently making a strong push and Gore is strongly considering.
Gore's departure was part of a disturbing trend over the last few days which was a sort of exodus of San Francisco 49ers players and continuing swirling rumors about key players on the team. Tuesday Linebacker Patrick Willis will announce his retirement shockingly(personally I cant get over it) and the perennial All-Pro will be joined by defensive end Justin Smith on a golf course somewhere retired.
Including Gore, Willis and Smith, other 49ers headed to free agency like Michael Crabtree whose future is uncertain, guard Mike Iupati plans to head to division rival Arizona, and Stevie Johnson who will be released by the team. Former 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh's breakup with the organization was a red flag that things might be bad, but if this was something the players wanted they still don't seem content to stick around.
The most disturbing of all, is the rumor that San Francisco is shopping quarterback Colin Kaepernick. I don't see this being very likely as Kaep is going to command a high price tag, but the uncertainty is concerning and this team should look dramatically different next season.
If the Niners are a one way street, Philly is a round about of sorts this free agency. The Eagles have already traded away LeSean McCoy to the Bills for Kiko Alsonso, Jeremy Maclin seems likely to rejoin Andy Reid in Kansas City(he also played at Missouri in college), as previously stated Frank Gore is considering the Eagles, corner Byron Maxwell has been linked with a deal and between rumors of Nick Foles on his way out, Kaepernick on his way in, and who knows who else Chip Kelly has considered trading.
The biggest fish in free Agency(you see what I did there) ended up with the Miami Dolphins in Ndamukong Suh who isn't going to bring good PR but Suh brings an intensity, an edge and the image of him driving Brady's #12 jersey into the ground twice a season is good enough for me to watch.
Speaking of Miami, "The U" has quite a few veteran guys on the market who could make an impact on a contending team. veteran wide outs Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne have been released from their respective teams, Vince Wilfork and Frank Gore are also looking for homes and any of these guys could mentor young guys and still make big plays if a team has a need.
Keeping up? Me either. Here's a few rumors and deals set to go down.
- Randall Cobb resigns with Packers
- Rams release Jake Long
- Devin McCourty back with Patriots
- Jacksonville to sign DT Jared Odrick
- WR Torrey Smith to 49ers
- Patriots do not pick up option on Darrelle Revis
- Brian Hartline to the Browns
- Steelers cut Brett Keisel
- Rumor: Bears shopping QB Jay Cutler
